The Cocktail Chronicles

The word “cocktail” and the idea of a “mission statement” should never appear in the same train of thought, but here we are – the “about” page. Well, if you must know—

The Cocktail Chronicles is an ongoing exploration of fine spirits, creative cocktails and classic mixology. This web log was created in May 2005 in an effort to document the drinks I’m experimenting with at any particular time, along with thoughts on cocktail ingredients, brands and types of spirits and the overall culture of drinking (I also discovered that it’s a handy way to keep track of all those cocktail recipes I was always losing on little slips of paper or in the little notebooks that clutter up my desk). Since its inception, The Cocktail Chronicles has explored more than 100 different drinks; covered the home-brew of obscure cocktail ingredients such as pimento dram and falernum; been the founding site and ongoing moderation source for the regular virtual cocktail party known as Mixology Monday; attracted—oh, hell, lots of readers (and pissed off a few, too); and presented only slightly inebriated daily updates from Tales of the Cocktail, the nation’s foremost cocktail event.

I couldn’t find an easy way to switch to compose in HTML when composing a message in Thunderbird so I started searching for extensions. I found that you don’t need an extension to accomplish this. All you need to do is hold shift while clicking on the compose button (”write” button).
Aesthetics of Play: Online Proceedings

In response to critics of supernatural horror tales, H.P. Lovecraft commenced his now famous work of literature with this incisive reply:

The appeal of the spectrally macabre is generally narrow because it demands from the reader a certain degree of imagination and a capacity for detachment from everyday life. Relatively few are free enough from the spell of the daily routine to respond to tappings from outside, and tales of ordinary feelings and events, or of common sentimental distortions of such feelings and events, will always take first place in the taste of the majority... ([1927] 1973 : 12).

Reformulated nowadays, Lovecraft might as easily have suggested that the appeal of the spectrally macabre demands that one plays its game. Because, while it is true that all genres are characterized by a set of pre-established conventions that generate a certain number of more or less precise expectations stimulating a certain reflexive game of guesswork and recognition, the horror genre might be the one that has been most often compared to a game.

How to build a cross-browser history management system - Tales from the Evil Empire

<blockquote><p>The main trick that history managers use is to have the browser believe the user navigated to a new url without the current page and all its JavaScript and DOM state being thrown away. The only part of the url that enables such a thing is the hash part. The hash part is what comes at the end of the url after a pound (#) sign. The original intent of this part of the url was to allow for navigation inside of the document. You would put a special named, href-less anchor tag in your document, and then navigating to #nameOfTheAnchor would just scroll the anchor into view. The page doesn't get reloaded, but it does enter the browser history.</p></blockquote><p>YUI Browser History Manager does that for you, but lack of documenting how it works under the hood.</p>
