Aby przybliżyć założenia i logikę wykorzystania teorii gier w praktyce strategii, rozważmy klasyczny przykład zwany problemem promocji6. Załóżmy, że dwie konkurencyjne firmy odzieżowe przygotowują nowe strategie marketingowe na lato. Każda z nich stoi w obliczu wyboru wielu działań marketingowych, z których najważniejsze - z racji wielkości wydatkowanych zasobów - to decyzje o reklamie. Każda ma dwie bazowe strategie: reklamować się lub nie, a wypłaty (korzyści) związane z tymi strategiami przedstawia tab. 1. 

Firma A osiągnie w przypadku podjęcia akcji reklamowej korzyści równe 6 (gdy firma B także będzie się reklamować) lub 9 (gdy firma B zrezygnuje z reklamy). W każdym przypadku są to dla firmy A korzyści większe niż przy braku reklamy z jej strony. Sytuacja firmy B jest nieco bardziej złożona i potencjalne korzyści też inne, np. z racji wielkości firmy, jej aktualnego udziału w rynku, siły marek itd. W przypadku podjęcia akcji reklamowej firma B osiągnie korzyści równe 11 (gdy firma A również podejmie reklamę) lub 16 (gdy firma A zaniecha reklamy). Zakładając racjonalność decyzji firmy A i podjęcie przez nią działań reklamowych (wtedy uzyskuje wyższe wypłaty), firma B powinna zdecydować się na akcję reklamową. Sytuacja decyzyjna firmy B nie jest jednak tak jednoznaczna jak jej konkurenta, albowiem przy braku reklamy z obu stron firma B uzyskałaby wyższą wypłatę równą 21 (a nie 16, jak przy założeniu akcji reklamowej). To byłoby jednak możliwe wtedy, gdy firma A dokonałaby nieracjonalnego (z jej punktu widzenia) wyboru strategii zaniechania reklamy! Bliższa analiza macierzy wypłat pozwala więc zrozumieć praktyczną użyteczność teorii gier jako analizy strategicznej w tej prostej sytuacji. Po pierwsze, każda z firm ma optymalną strategię, która zapewnia jej maksymalizację efektu. Po drugie, żadna z firm nie powinna mieć motywacji do zmiany strategii, dopóki druga firma nie zmieni swojej strategii.</description>
