The Apple/Google divorce continues to come into focus: Apple quietly bought Placebase, a mapping service company, back in July. Apple doesn't buy companies it's not going to use. Meaning, Apple's getting into making their own maps. Peace out, Google.

We are always on, always connected, always thinking, always talking. There is no time for stillness — and sitting in front of a frenetic computer all day, and then in front of the hyperactive television, doesn’t count as stillness. This comes at a cost: we lose that time for contemplation, for observing and listening. We lose peace.
In general, it would be nice to read and see reports from despotic regimes during times of peace, so that we can have a window into their world before the blood spills. (One good example of seeing into the lives of people in a war zone is the "Gaza Sderot" video show that I profiled on MediaShift.)
So, in a nutshell, here is a tick-list for an architecture for participation:

On page 30, Elinor Davidov writes about a 40-episode television documentary called Gaza-Sderot, Life in Spite of Everything. Each episode features an interview with an ordinary person on either side of the border, describing daily life. The result is a fascinating combination of drama and banality that makes each episode worth watching. It was co-produced by a staff from Sderot’s Sapir College, Gaza’s Ramattan Studios and the German-French arte.tv (photos and bio blurbs are here).

A German television studio has produced a series of two minute videos from Gaza and Sderot, an Israeli city neighboring Gaza. The clips reveal what the news cameras do not: snapshots of daily life. It's an amazing behind the scenes look at the individuals behind the labels of "Israeli" or "Palestinian."
