Bits Of Destruction Hit the Book Publishing Business: Part 1

One massive wave crashing down is confusing enough. But when three crash at the same time, even seeing what's going on (let alone predicting how things will play out) becomes really difficult. These three big new waves are:

1. The digitization of print books by Google Book Search.

2. Increasing consumer acceptance of e-books, mostly because of the Kindle.

3.
4store - About

4store is a database storage and query engine that holds RDF data. It has been used by Garlik as their primary RDF platform for three years, and has proved itself to be robust and secure.

4store's main strengths are it's performance, scalability and stability. It does not provide many features over and above RDF storage and SPARQL queries, but if your are looking for a scalable, secure, fast and efficient RDF store, then 4store should be on your shortlist.

Exposure Fusion: What is it? How does it Compare to HDR? How Do I Do It?

Exposure Fusion Software

At this stage Exposure Fusion is still in its infancy, so there’s only a handful of programs to choose from.

Enfuse is the primary tool for Exposure Fusion at the moment, and although it is a command line utility, there are ‘‘droplets’‘ (batch files) available that you can drag and drop a series of images onto to create a fused image.

Ingemar Bergmark has produced a GUI for it, not surprisingly called EnfuseGui, which can be a little easier if you aren’t too keen on command lines. If you’ve got Lightroom then one of the more convenient ways is to use the plugin. It still uses the command line utility in the background (you have to tell it where your enfuse.exe is), but the process looks more refined. However, the plugin is donation-ware so its limited to 500px final images until you donate to get the full version. There is currently no plugin for Photoshop. If you’re into photo stitching then PTgui and Hugin may be of interest to you. These programs utilise Exposure Fusion by stitching and fusing bracketed sequences together, with some pretty nice results.

Can you hear me now? The operator-centric mobile model is over
Last week, T-Mobile Germany made some waves by banning Skype for the iPhone. Some might read this as a long overdue reassertion of operator power, but I disagree. A few months ago, I learned from a reliable source that a major operator was deliberately not shipping a very popular mobile phone model that they knew their customers wanted because the phone didn’t give them enough control over what the customer does. The phone was too open. This is exactly what Google was talking about back in 2007 when it insisted on openness as a condition to bidding in the FCC’s spectrum auction.

Ten years ago, when I covered mobile operators on Wall Street, they used to cite their vast capital expenditure on building on their cellular networks as their core differentiator. This was the reality behind Verizon’s amusing “can you hear me now?” campaign.

Conditional Random Fields

Conditional random fields (CRFs) are a probabilistic framework for labeling and segmenting structured data, such as sequences, trees and lattices. The underlying idea is that of defining a conditional probability distribution over label sequences given a particular observation sequence, rather than a joint distribution over both label and observation sequences. The primary advantage of CRFs over hidden Markov models is their conditional nature, resulting in the relaxation of the independence assumptions required by HMMs in order to ensure tractable inference. Additionally, CRFs avoid the label bias problem, a weakness exhibited by maximum entropy Markov models (MEMMs) and other conditional Markov models based on directed graphical models. CRFs outperform both MEMMs and HMMs on a number of real-world tasks in many fields, including bioinformatics, computational linguistics and speech recognition.
