Free Music Archive

Not to be confused with the Live Music Archive (see the MP3 Hub section, above), the Free Music Archive is a new (in 2009) resource of free and legal MP3s that was launched by the venerable NYC-area public radio station, WFMU (which is, you should know, the longest-running free-form radio station in the US). The Free Music Archive describes itself as "a social music website built around a curated library of free, legal audio." Featuring downloadable songs placed online by WFMU, KEXP, and a handful of other interesting musical organizations, the Free Music Archive can be browsed by curator or genre, but you have to thumb through a lot--there are no easy indexes to get a broad look at the offerings. And while the site claims to have more than 5,000 MP3s available, what's here is decidedly idiosyncratic. Still, as a large repository of free and legal MP3s, it's worth a visit every now and then.
GoodRelations: An ontology for linking product descriptions and business entities on the Web

<blockquote><p>GoodRelations is a lightweight ontology for annotating offerings on the Web. It is to our knowledge the first non-toy vocabulary for describing the types of goods and terms and conditions of items and services offered on the Web. The GoodRelations ontology complements products and services ontologies, like eClassOWL, by providing the vocabulary for expressing things like</p><p>that a particular Web site describes an offer to sell cellphones of a certain make and model at a certain price,</p><p>that a pianohouse offers maintenance for pianos that weigh less than 150 kg,</p><p>or that a car rental company leases out cars of a certain make and model from a particular set of branches across the country.</p></blockquote>

Screenshot Tour: US - Picasa 3 Beta's New Features

Windows/Linux: Picasa, Google's photo management tool, has quietly announced a new beta that adds basic movie editing, fuller syncing to Web Albums, and many other features and changes. Actually, the biggest change in the new Picasa isn't in the software itself—it's a new "quick view" utility, which replaces the basic double-click viewing tool in Windows with a Picasa-friendly, drop-cloth-style window. Five new collage styles have also been added to the offerings, and Picasa's new "Movie Maker" tool lets you create slideshow-style clips out of stills or trim and paste video clips together. Check out Picasa's help section for more details on what's new and what's changed, or read on for a peek at some screenshots from the new release.

There are, perhaps, four directions we can take:
   1. Evaluate the complete range of closed and open source offerings, pick the best, and be prepared to pay a yearly licence fee of an unknown amount
   2. Develop our own private search engine, possibly based on ht://Dig [3] or egothor [4] code
   3. Make use of the free Google index of our pages
   4. License Google technology to do local indexing

Each route has its attractions, but the latter two are particularly attractive because of the high degree of trust in, and familiarity with, Google. But the public search has problems:

    * Google cannot see inside our protected sites
    * Every search transaction has to leave our site, is dependent on international networks, and uses up bandwidth
    * The depth and frequency of search is not guaranteed
    * Google may withdraw the service at any time

It's that time of year when many news gathering sites are posting their versions of the year 2007 in pictures. It's no surprise that MSNBC, which always has a strong weekly offering, has a great 2007 Year in Pictures. Others include the International Herald Tribune which can be found here; AOL has two very strong offerings in a People's Choice gallery and an Editor's Choice gallery; Time has a fine gallery of the Year in Images; Reuters presents more than 100 of its best photos here; some of the best photos from the European Pressphoto Agency (epa) can be found in its Yearender 2007; Sports Illustrated has amassed 43 of its best photos; USA TODAY uses a drop-down menu for various categories in its 2007: The year in pictures; National Geographic has a five-photo gallery of its best wildlife photos; The New York Times highlights 2007: The Year in Pictures; The Washington Post's Best of Post 2007 features several favourite multimedia projects; the Los Angeles Times features Best of 2007: Photography; The San Francisco Chronicle has its own Year in Pictures which features 12 galleries of the best Day in Pictures from the SFGate site; appropriate to the season, Canada's National Post has two very interesting photo galleries on Faith and Mirth and Joy.

Yahoo! Widgets - Blog

The world of Widgets has changed a lot since Konfabulator came along back in 2003, when it was the only option of its kind for developers. Since then, similar offerings have emerged from several places, including Apple, and tomorrow, Microsoft as part of Vista. It has grown to such a point that Newsweek is proclaiming 2007 as the Year of the Widget.

mysiteprofile » mysiteprofile.com

MySiteProfile.com is a search engine friendly, online community and social network for bloggers, web designers, developers and various types of artists. It gives its members the opportunity to brand themselves through a personalized profile page in which they can promote their businesses or services, as well as their talents and interests, while gaining recognition amongst other like minds. Although MySiteProfile.com was intended to be used by web marketing professionals, we welcome all persons interested in the offerings of this site.

MySiteProfile allows members to actively participate in the networking and self- promotion process through various features.

   1. Some of these features include:
   2. Personal Profile Pages with member's descriptions, live links, logos or images, various design choices and a personalized messaging system
   3. Galleries to upload web snapshots, photos, images, artwork, etc.
   4. Biweekly Design Contests with unique categories
   5. Blogs that are continuously updated on the community home page
   6. Specific Groups that can be originally created or subscribed to
   7. Community Forums for ongoing support, current announcements and postings

Upcoming Features:

   1. Flash Animation section where members can submit flash movies
   2. Video and Music Upload tool
   3. Built in RSS Aggregator where members can sink their favorite feeds to their profile section

MySiteProfile.com Inspiration:
After numerous attempts of finding a free directory to promote my websites, I just kept coming up with spam in my email and no traffic results. Even with legitimate directories, there was no opportunity to visually present the site I was submitting, resulting in a needle in a haystack effect.

What makes MySiteProfile.com different than other online communities?
Unlike myspace, the community's focus is networking on a professional level while targeting web geeks (and I mean that with the utmost respect). Its features give its members the chance to support each other and give valuable feedback on things such as site design, SEO, and marketing techniques. I also notice that my pioneer members are enjoying the commonalities that they share while becoming friends in a niche web society.

InfoQ: Tracking change and innovation in the enterprise software development community

My most favourite knowledge center of agile development, i can agree with Floyd Marinescu's "unlaunch" of InfoQ.com (March 2006):

InfoQ.com - a new community that aims to be your source for keeping up with change and innovation in the enterprise software development community, specifically serving the Java, .NET, Ruby, SOA, and Agile communities

InfoQ is driven by an editorial team - as opposed to a computer - that eliminates quality issues created by syndication and non-technical journalism. InfoQ's content offerings also includes articles, case studies, streaming video interviews and conference presentations, and short books. Each of the five communities we serve has a dedicated editorial staff and calendar that publishes new content every week.
