Who Is Megan Casey ?

It's so hard to keep up with tween phenomena these days. By the time the Internet Movie Database lists them they may already be passé I happened upon this newcomer quite by accident. She is apparently better known in Germany.

Follow Megan's meteoric rise to obscurity here, as she battle impossible situations and ridiculous odds.

Near Future Laboratory » Blog Archive » The Map Is Here For You To Use

Departing Madrid early on a Sunday morning, I found this paper map of the Metro, tucked neatly within the seams of a pre-fab wall, ready for re-use. I wondered, who was on their way out of Madrid, thinking that they could not in good conscience throw away their worn map, looking about for a way to pass it along to another visitor.

Another instance of a Thoughtful Act.

Why do I blog this? Sudden interest in observing improvisatory social practices which are signals of a sort, not always of a “service” or designed object to adopt that practice into a commodified instantiation. But sometimes merely a curiosity that helps us better understand who we/people are, like waypoints along a contour of individual and collective humanities.

the interesting thing with the map offered here is that it is an pseudo anonymous gift. At an instant t when the map has been put, the local people around the person may have identified the gesture and see the person (unlikely but let's say they have at least seen the act) BUT the people who will benefit of it in the further instant have probably no connection at all with the source.

A signature (automatic or not) defines a contract that tie to all kind of responsibilities and legibility which are not necessary beneficial for the group as large. The anonymous nature is defined by the time span and the a-connection between the two events (giving the map/receiving the map). Both gestures will be locally identified but the odds of being connected very small. On the Web, the odds of connection are very high and change completely the social dynamics of giving and sharing information. The network has a "memory" of the context.

Birthday problem / Birthday paradox

A great description of the concept/math behind the Birthday problem. Basically, if you have 23 people in a room, odds are better than 50-50 that 2 folks will share the same birthday. [With a group of 7, odds are better than 50-50 that two folks have a birthday within a week of each other.]

Also the basis for the "Birthday attack" hacking vector. Given a hashing (1-way encryption) algorithm of fixed length output, multiple inputs can result in the same hash. It is very difficult to guess an alternate input that will hash into a match of a single given result. But given a large known set of results (e.g., a user account database table) it become more likely that an alternate input might result in a match of at least one existing hash.

Thinking on such things keeps the mind sharp :)

Up from Slavery Education Activity

This activity will take you on a journey ‘Up from Slavery' through the voices of enslaved Africans. You will begin at the stage of capture and go though the infamous Middle Passage across the Atlantic. You will learn what it was like to be auctioned and sold as if you were cattle, then to work on the plantations in the Caribbean or Americas under the cruel whip of the slave master. You will have an insight into how enslaved Africans were punished and how people were made to suffer under slavery. You will also learn how Africans against all odds stood up to their enslavement, and how many escaped and found freedom.

This activity takes the form of a quiz that consists of nine questions. In order to answer the questions correctly and to pass from one stage to the next, you must first click on 'About' to find out more information on the enslaved Africans and then click on 'Read' to hear about their experiences in their own words. Click on 'Question' at the bottom of the screen.
