Needle in a haystack: efficient storage of billions of photos | Facebook

The Photos application is one of Facebook’s most popular features. Up to date, users have uploaded over 15 billion photos which makes Facebook the biggest photo sharing website. For each uploaded photo, Facebook generates and stores four images of different sizes, which translates to a total of 60 billion images and 1.5PB of storage. The current growth rate is 220 million new photos per week, which translates to 25TB of additional storage consumed weekly. At the peak there are 550,000 images served per second. These numbers pose a significant challenge for the Facebook photo storage infrastructure.

The Trouble with Version Numbers

Software version numbers should be straightforward to implement. Their sequencing is hardly subtle: version 1.0 is the first production quality release; version 1.1 improves on it, version 1.2 is a little better; and so on until we get to version 2.0, which delivers more substantial changes. Then comes 2.1, then 2.2 ...

As anyone who has tried to implement such a scheme will realise, it can be a surprising source of problems, and although these problems have been tackled by many projects in many organisations there seems to be no consensus on how to reach a solution. To give an example: deriving the version number from the version control system is tempting, but ultimately turns out to be unsatisfactory.

New ELI 7 Things... Brief Explores Data Visualization II | EDUCAUSE

Data visualization is the use of tools to represent data in the form of charts, maps, tag clouds, animations, or any graphical means that make content easier to understand. Graphic representations of data are popular because they open up the way we think about data, reveal hidden patterns, and highlight connections among elements. Because current web applications allow anyone with access to data to enter information and easily create a virtualization of it, students, informal learners, and the purely curious can now easily create visualizations that might reveal trends that were not obvious from the numbers alone.

This works on AutoPager 0.5.1.4 or newer version. This is the recording of the steps to create the rule for http://www.pspad.com/en/pspad-extensions.php. This demo shows how to create AutoPager rules for the pages which don't have "Next" in links. They only have a navbar includes all the page numbers like this: Page: [1], 2, 3, 4. The final link xpath get in this tutorial is: //div[@id='obspoz']/p/text()[contains(.,'[')]/following-sibling::a[1] Steps explains: //div[@id='obspoz']/p :select the navbar. //div[@id='obspoz']/p/text() : select the texts in the navbar since current page number does not have a node //div[@id='obspoz']/p/text()[contains(.,'[')] : select the text for the current page number. It will be easier if the current page number has a node, for example if it's a span with class='current': //div[@id='obspoz']/p/span[@class='current']. //div[@id='obspoz']/p/text()[contains(.,'[')]/following-sibling::a[1] : select the first link after the current page number text.

SSRN-Broken Promises of Privacy: Responding to the Surprising Failure of Anonymization by Paul Ohm

Computer scientists have recently undermined our faith in the privacy-protecting power of anonymization, the name for techniques for protecting the privacy of individuals in large databases by deleting information like names and social security numbers. These scientists have demonstrated they can often “reidentify” or “deanonymize” individuals hidden in anonymized data with astonishing ease. By understanding this research, we will realize we have made a mistake, labored beneath a fundamental misunderstanding, which has assured us much less privacy than we have assumed. This mistake pervades nearly every information privacy law, regulation, and debate, yet regulators and legal scholars have paid it scant attention. We must respond to the surprising failure of anonymization, and this Article provides the tools to do so.

Re: vCard RDF merge.... from Toby Inkster on 2009-06-30 (www-archive@w3.org from June 2009)

A while back I wrote a little RDF vocab that extended the 2006 vCard vocab. It introduces a few extra terms which I thought were useful, mostly taken from the vCard 4.0 drafts at the time. e.g. a "lang" property to indicate languages spoken by the person represented. One other thing it has though is a more vCard-like way of representing telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc.

Scribbler takes simple vector based input (in the case of the online toy, your drawing) and creates its own drawing on top of it based on a number of simple rules. When a new scribble line is created it chooses a few numbers at random that eventually determine what sort of line it will draw. As it begins to draw it fine tunes those values to the type of drawing that you've made. Certain scribbles are better at following straight paths, others are better at outlining curves, and others are better for filling in large areas of color. Because there is randomness built into the program, each scribble is unique.
