A few people have been asking me how the LENS Blog on The New York Times site came to be and what software it was built on. I thought I’d shed a little light on the development process and answer some of these questions.
For the Michael Jackson Memorial piece I worked on, we decided before I left for L.A. that we would use the Canon 5D Mark II to try and push the look of the piece, and to try something new. The first thing I did, is call up a freelancer, Patrick Burke, to run sound. Patrick used to be an AC (Assistant Camera) in L.A. so he came with all the right tools, including a film slate that we used to sync audio from a Marantz PMD660 to the video footage of the 5D.
The use of motiongraphics/animation is still pretty new at The New York Times. We’re still figuring things out, but I thought it might be useful for some people to see what our work flow is like.

Reuters a mis en ligne mercredi une production interactive et multimedia qui retrace une année de crise financière déclenchée par la faillite de la banque d'affaires Lehman Brothers, le 15 septembre 2008. Cette production, baptisée "Times of Crisis" (www.reuters.com/timesofcrisis), a été réalisée en anglais en intégrant la couverture video, photo, texte et infographie produite par Reuters au long des douze derniers mois. Intégrant des centaines de photos, plusieurs heures de video - dont des témoignages inédits de nombreux grands acteurs de la crise - des milliers de dépêches, encadrés, portraits, analyses, etc. "Times of Crisis" permet de revivre au jour le jour la plus grande crise économique mondiale depuis les années 30. Reuters reviendra par ailleurs au cours des prochains jours sur les conséquences de la faillite de Lehman Brothers à l'occasion du premier anniversaire de la plus importante faillite bancaire jamais intervenue.

Une armada de traducteurs ont traduit les entretiens. Ancien journaliste de Radio Populare, Angelo Miotto et Matteo Scanni, directeur de l'école de journalisme de l'Université catholique de Milan ont remporté plusieurs prix ensemble pour leurs documentaires sur des sujets engagés (amiante, opérations immobilières, trafics de visa, etc) «Le reportage a été conçu au départ uniquement pour devenir un document multimedia, mais nous savions que nous pourrions exploiter chacun de notre côté les éléments qui ont été utilisés» explique Angelo Miotto. Combien de temps pour réaliser ce tout premier webdocumentaire pour les quatre mousquetaires ? Quatre mois et demi. «On a travaillé comme des fous jour et nuit pour terminer à temps» (commémoration de la chute du Mur de Berlin).
