Les américains surfent (plus) la nuit

    * We all share the same morning and evening Internet addiction: On average, European traffic starts picking up around 5am GMT / 7 am CEST and similarly US traffic takes off around the same time at 7am EDT. Internet traffic also reaches its peaks in the early evening (7pm GMT / 9pm CEST in Europe and 10pm EDT / 7 pm PDT in the US).

    * North American’s don’t surf over dinner: Unlike European traffic, US daily Internet percentages take a small dip in the early evening between 6pm and 10pm EDT. In contrast, Europe traffic keeps climbing through the evening until a marked 9pm GMT / 11pm CEST drop off. Of course, Europeans tend towards later (and longer) dinner hours than their North American counterparts.

    * What Europeans do at night: Actually, this bullet point should be what Europeans don’t do at night — spend a lot of time on the Internet. In contrast to North America, European traffic plummets much more steeply and reaches a lower daily minimum than US traffic (US traffic never drops below 50% whereas Europe declines more more than 60% from its peak). Apparently, North American Internet users stay up later and use the Internet longer (next blog post we’ll explore what they’re doing on the Internet late at night).

Steering Behaviors For Autonomous Characters

This paper presents solutions for one requirement of autonomous characters in animation and games: the ability to navigate around their world in a life-like and improvisational manner. These "steering behaviors" are largely independent of the particulars of the character's means of locomotion. Combinations of steering behaviors can be used to achieve higher level goals (For example: get from here to there while avoiding obstacles, follow this corridor, join that group of characters...) This paper divides motion behavior into three levels. It will focus on the middle level of steering behaviors, briefly describe the lower level of locomotion, and touch lightly on the higher level of goal setting and strategy.

Home Income Plan

Mail online have reported that UK pensioners with an existing equity release scheme could save up to £300 million collectively by switching to an alternative plan at a lower interest rate. Equity release rates are fixed for life and have reduced over the past few years from around 8% to approximately 6%. The site claims that customers who have loans with the longest established lenders such as, Northern Rock and Mortgage Express could gain significantly by switching. It is estimated that approximately 10,000 pensioners could save up to £30,000 in interest payments over a 15 year period by switching their current equity release plan to one with a lower interest rate.

Enabling HTTP Compression in IIS 6.0

HTTP Compression is a wonderful technology that accomplishes a lot of different things. It allows faster page serving to clients and lower server costs due to lowered bandwidth (these two being enough for me to implement). There are a handful of articles out there that explain how to implement HTTP Compression in Internet Information Server (IIS) 6.0, but I haven’t been able to find a nice step-by-step article, so I decided to set one up. In this how-to, I’ll briefly explain what HTTP Compression is and how it works in IIS 6.0, and then provide step-by-step instructions on how to implement it because it’s not as simple as flipping a switch. In fact, there are many things in multiple places on the server you have to properly configure to implement HTTP Compression.

charlesv: Netvibes Slimserver Mashup = All Your MP3s Anywhere, In Any Browser

jax tabs and all sorts of actually useful web 2.0 interface bits. One of the cooler things about netvibes is you can subscribe to podcasts on your netvibes page, and it will play them in a small flash (?) mp3 player at the top of the screen, no external application required.

For a long time, I've been using SlimServer to listen to my music library at work / wherever. It monitors my iTunes database (but can point to folders), and will transcode on the fly to a lower bitrate so that I can stream at a listenable quality on my residential cable connection. I've been using winamp to listen to the stream, but that was a little clunky, and I thought there must be a better way.

Looking on the netvibes ecosystem (a repository of rss feeds, podcasts, and custom netvibes mini-apps called modules), I couldn't find a SlimServer control/streaming module. So, I decided to hack together my own solution which, if I say so myself is pretty ding-dang neat.

Here are some screenshots of it in action

Composition started as my way to express and share a passion for design. It started a little over 5 years ago with a 450 square foot space in lower downtown Denver. It was a terrible retail location but I guess I was so optimistic and naive that I didn't know any better. I think my sheer exuberance for the products, vendors and the people I was meeting carried me through that first 15 months. Since then, I have learned a great deal about the retail business and its many challenges; grown the store to 2600 square feet in its current Belmar location and continued to feed and share my passion for design and the creative community that this store reaches. I have a lot more to say and share, but right now there is a website to launch.

While in New York last fall, we recorded some take away shows with the director, Vincent Moon, who is one of the fabulous. here are four videos for four songs of ours recently posted to LA BLOGOTHEQUE website. We walk around in une boutique de bonbon, ride in the rear a van, stand on a street corner, and walk the streets all in the lower east side. It was a pleasure to work with Vincent Moon.
