French journalists working on Web documentary Charlotte Burrous / The Daily Record Visiting Fremont County was more than what they ever dreamed about. It went so well they have decided to come back this fall to complete the Web documentary, which is supported by the National Centre du Cinema in Paris. Traveling from France, journalist David Dufresne and photographer Philippe Brault arrived recently to create a Web documentary on society and the culture of the people who live in the prisons and around them in Fremont County.
Best known for her cultural documentation, Ami Vitale has received recognition from World Press Photos, Photographer of the Year International, The Lucie Awards and the South Asian Journalists Association presented her with the Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding reporting. She has been named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association, and Photo District News recognized her as one of 30 image makers of the future.

When the Asian tsunami hit southern Thailand in 2004, the sea that had sustained the region for generations – the Andaman – rose up, destroying families and killing thousands. Three-and-a-half years later, a team of journalists set out for the seaside province of Phang-nga to document the lives and culture of people living by the Andaman. They found a people marked – but not defined – by disaster, a people who have taken on challenges and risen above them. By the salty docks of Phang-nga they found stories of determination. In Buddhist temples they found tradition. On boats and in schools and on the streets of tiny villages, they found surprises, sadness, laughter and hope. Welcome to life by the Andaman Sea.

They offer opportunities for students to connect with the journalists and their peers about global issues via the web. Through the Gateways, students can dig deep into the reporting, discuss it online and share their own stories through user-generated uploads of video and commentary, expanding a global conversation on under-reported international issue.
In general, it would be nice to read and see reports from despotic regimes during times of peace, so that we can have a window into their world before the blood spills. (One good example of seeing into the lives of people in a war zone is the "Gaza Sderot" video show that I profiled on MediaShift.)

Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. Launched in May 2004, Media Matters for America put in place, for the first time, the means to systematically monitor a cross section of print, broadcast, cable, radio, and Internet media outlets for conservative misinformation — news or commentary that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda — every day, in real time. Using the website www.mediamatters.org as the principal vehicle for disseminating research and information, Media Matters posts rapid-response items as well as longer research and analytic reports documenting conservative misinformation throughout the media. Expats burn when travel writers and foreign journalists make simplistic generalization, but, with half the Beijing story hidden, I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of it. And this will only reinforce the commonly-held belief that Westerners just can’t understand China. (Or the commonly-held belief that China’s all ancient temples and KFCs. Either or!)
