The International Phonetic Alphabet - limited free version

The following page provides a graphic interface for exploring the International Phonetic Alphabet. To use the resource simply click on any link to hear an illustrative example. For example, most rows in the Pulmonic chart (Manner of Articulation) have descriptive audio that explains each row completely. Other charts (Non-Pulmonic, Vowels etc.) have detailed audio descriptions available by clicking on the chart title. Within each chart, clicking on any IPA character will play an example of that sound. With consonants, you will hear the sound in exclusion followed by an intervocalic example. You will need a recent browser and QuickTime installed on your computer in order to use the page to the fullest. You will also need a UVic NetLinkID to access these copyrighted materials.

technobabbler » Blog Archive » drive a webcam with python

I bought a USB webcam off of eBay quite some time ago, and I decided to connect it to my telescope with a little bit of hardware hackery. I'll have to see about posting a writeup on how I did that at a later time. Anyway, when I installed my camera software, I quickly found how horrible the program was. It gave a tiny preview of what the camera saw, and had no way of capturing images or video without waaaay too many clicks of the mouse. That's when I decided to write my own in Python.

If you have an RSS or Atom feed, insert the URL of your feed into the feed element. Save your document with an .xml extension (we used updated_button.xml). Copy the XML file to the root of your website directory. It's ready to go! Now, just add the below link to your site, where ever you choose and when people click it, they will get your button added onto their Google toolbar: http://toolbar.google.com/buttons/add?url=http://www.yourwebsite.com/yourbuttonxmlfile.xml Replace the url= with the fully qualified public url to your xml file.

Semantic Maps is an extension that adds semantic capabilities to the Maps extension, and therefore provides the ability to add, view and edit coordinate data stored through the Semantic MediaWiki extension, using multiple mapping services. These include Google Maps, OpenLayers and Yahoo Maps. Semantic Maps and Maps are based on Semantic Google Maps and Semantic Layers, and are meant to replace these extensions. For this extension to work, you need to have both Semantic MediaWiki and Maps installed. Examples of how to use Semantic Maps can be found here.

KDE on Windows News
RSS
April 7th, 2009 : KDE 4.2.2 for Windows available
The KDE on Windows team today announced the immediate availability of "Cano", (a.k.a KDE 4.2.2), another bugfix and maintenance update of the KDE release. New in this release is an unstable snapshot of K3B, the KDE cd burning application. As a service release, the changelog contains a list of bugfixes and improvements. Note that the changelog is usually incomplete, for a complete list of changes that went into KDE 4.2.2, you can browse the Subversion log. KDE 4.2.2 also ships a more complete set of translations. The binary packages could be installed with the installer by using the version "stable 4.2.2" (or "stable latest"). In case you are upgrading your KDE installation, deselect the skip basic settings checkbox on the first installer page and press next until you are guided to the release settings page where you can choose the required version.
