Correct way to handle mobile browsers | Surfing in Kansas

Minidetector is a Django reusable app that allows you to know if a request is being viewed on a mobile device. It provides a middleware and a view decorator that sets a request.mobile variable to True if the request is coming from a mobile device. It's method of figuring out if a device is mobile is simple; It first checks for a special Opera Mini header, then for WAP support, then finally checks the User Agent against a list of known mobile strings.

Toward urban systems design « Adam Greenfield’s Speedbird

you said: “Especially given the by-now-clichéd recognition that we’ve decisively become an urban species”

It is indeed very interesting to think about urban systems design given there was a major move toward cities. That said I have the feeling that this move comes with, at least, three issues:

1. access to the “thought” urban environment,

2. the space left where 50% of the population is still living,

3. the space of this growth

There are many areas in the world where the growth of the cities is made by people without access or a limited access to the thought urban environment. Poor people living in slums or just in a space which is not part of the work of urban planner per say. In a recent exhibition about slums I went, it was very interesting to see that the organic structure of the slums was making possible for the individuals to create a rich and meaningful space, driving sometimes to less criminality than more traditional areas of the city. The slum is a forced collective creative space for survival.

The rest of the population, the 50% living in deserted areas are the forgotten of this story. It’s indeed more “fun”, interesting for researchers, sociologists to observe and think about the density in urban space (richness of interactions) more than the low level of activities in the “countryside”. Though there are equal challenges there in terms of design and space organization, access to services, etc.

Finally, is it really cities which are growing? What we call urban space often relates to the city center, but I have the feeling that the growth is happening in the in-between space (suburbs), which is again a complete disaster in terms of design, even more so in rich countries. The private space is becoming a space of non-creativity, dead areas of non activities. Someone, who wants to start a small business in between two buildings on the grass of a random suburb of a rich city, will not last for very long. Complete different dynamic than the slum where unregulated areas give the opportunity of creative solutions for surviving or living.

In this book, we'll be using the freely available IBuySpy Portal as a starting point for our intranet development. We'll look at both why we are modifying an existing intranet application rather than creating our own, and why we choose the IBuySpy Portal in particular. Once we have covered the basics, we'll take a tour of its features, looking at the files and types it consists of, how they function and fit together, and general principles behind the site. Finally, we'll take a brief look at how security is handled.

Muso Shinden Ryo Iaido Koryu Kata (All Japan Kendo Federation) - View topic • sharethefiles.com

These Iai arts were performed by NAGAE Matasaburo, in his sixties (guess). He was born and lived in Nagasaki, received the 7th grade of Kendo and 8th grade of Iai from Zen-Nippon Kendo Renmei (All-Japan Kendo Federation). He also practiced Shinto Munen style Iai. The original movies were recorded in 8mm films, then edited in a VHS tape. It's not known who took and maintained these films (maybe one of Matasaburo's disciples did).
They were converted to DV (digital video) format, stored in HDD, finally created QuickTime H.263 format (360x240, 15fps, compressed).

Evaluation of Digital Repository Software at the National Library of Medicine

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Library of Medicine® (NLM) undertook an 18-month project to evaluate, test and recommend digital repository software and systems to support NLM's collection and preservation of a wide variety of digital objects. This article outlines the methodology NLM used to analyze the landscape of repository software and select three systems for in-depth testing. Finally, the article discusses the evaluation results and next steps for NLM. This project followed an earlier NLM working group, which created functional requirements and identified key policy issues for an NLM digital repository to aid in building NLM's collection in the digital environment.

keybr.com - take typing speed test and practice typing online

Have you ever wished that you had a way to practice typing so that you could become a more efficient and capable keyboard jockey? Typing at the “speed of thought,” perhaps? Enter Keybr.com — the flash–based typing instructor you’ve been waiting for!
Keybr.com is very straightforward. You can choose from three basic lessons that start with a certain number of keys on the keyboard, and then, as you progress through the lessons, more keys are introduced to the mix to make things a little tougher. As an added bonus, our software keeps track of all your mistakes and your words–per–minute (wpm) — and even creates graphs of your day–by–day performance.
But, things get even better! Once you have determined that the lessons you have completed have reached their maximum result, get ready to play with custom mode, where you can edit and personalize the text that you wish to practice! Very bare–bones, but oh, so functional.
Finally, to up the entertainment level of your typing lessons, you can import content from a web site or blog into Keybr.com to type it out.
But why even bother to learn touch typing? The answer is simple — it is healthier for you, faster and more accurate. Blogging, writing long documents and e–mails, instant messaging with your friends, and even coding sophisticated computer programs will become much easier and more enjoyable once you eliminate distraction of hunt–and–peck typing.
If you are curious about how touch typing appears to onlookers, please watch a couple of short YouTube videos demonstrating really high typing speed:

Photoshop High Key Glow Effect Tutorial

In this Photoshop tutorial, we'll learn how to create a high key glow effect, which is a fancy way of saying we'll be applying a glow only to the highlights in an image. This effect works especially well with wedding portraits since it's great for adding a romantic, magical look to your photos, and wedding portraits usually contain lots of bright white areas to work with. We'll see how to easily select just the highlights in an image using Photoshop's Color Range command, then we'll copy the highlights to their own layer and create the glow effect using a blur filter and one of Photoshop's layer blend modes designed for lightening images. Finally, we'll combine layers into a layer group and use a layer mask to limit the areas where the glow effect is visibile. It may sound like a lot of work, but once you know how to do it, the entire effect can be completed in just a few minutes! I'm using Photoshop CS4 here, but any recent version of Photoshop will work.

Tired of distracting ad images cluttering up your web experience, or even your email? Here is a simple way to keep many of these ads from displaying in your browser. The technique below works for any Gecko-based browser (Mozilla, Firefox, Camino, Netscape7). It also works for Apple's browser: Safari. See the special instructions for Safari below. And it even works with the Thunderbird mail client! See Thunderbird directions below. Also, check out the new notes on dealing with Flash advertising, below. Finally, I've improved the ad blocking based on user feedback. Already using it? Grab the latest for even better results.

scala-migrations - Project Hosting on Google Code

Scala Migrations is a library to manage upgrades and rollbacks to database schemas. Migrations allow a source control system to manage together the database schema and the code using the schema. It is designed to allow multiple developers working on a project with a database backend to design schema modifications independently, apply the migrations to their local database for debugging and when complete, check them into a source control system to manage as one manages normal source code. Other developers then check out the new migrations and apply them to their local database. Finally, the migrations are used to migrate the production databases to the latest schema version.

The Scala Migrations library is written in Scala and makes use of the clean Scala language to write easy to understand migrations, which are also written in Scala. Scala Migrations provides a database abstraction layer that allows migrations to target any supported database vendor.

Cool Tools: How To Wrap Five Eggs

Presentation is everything in Japan. Go to any department store and buy even a small sack of tea, and the time and effort put into packing up your purchase is enough to astound any n00b Westerner. This tradition goes way back, of course. First published in 1967 and long out of print, this picture-heavy book of classic Japanese packaging has finally been reprinted in paperback. The title is misleading. There are no step-by-step directions, only black and white images up front with annotations in the back, detailing the materials used, region, specific use/occasion/tradition surrounding each item.
