The Web At A New Crossroads

Technology was then the black sheep, having left overnight millionaires destitute and without change to afford their $4 lattes. Even the posers had left San Francisco and gone back to suburbia to be office managers at Walmart.

It was a sad time for everyone — that is, except the die-hards and the hackers. The web for them had never been about making money, but about reshaping culture and toppling the old order. 2003, therefore, was the perfect time for a resurgence: the people who kept pushing on in the Valley and elsewhere were a concentrated motley crew of innovators and builders. They cared about technology for technology’s sake and about developing and advancing web culture.

What they didn’t realize, however, was that the services and technologies that they were destined to build would need to be cobbled and sewn together using a system that would fight them every step of the way — not out of spite — but because of its architecture. By definition the network available was decidedly anti-human: in 2003, there was only the document-centric web.

HTML 5 is a mess. Now what? – Jeffrey Zeldman Presents The Daily Report

So I’ve tended to be plain accepting that HTML 5 will be whatever it is, and if its bad its bad because of Hickson and a certain crowd. I have no power to affect the obsessive thoughts of certain individuals one way or the other. I’m also probably representative of quite a large group of the silent disenchanted who will continue to code in HTML 4 or XHTML 1 well into the future and fight on building websites in whatever tag soup monstrosity we are burdened with on the day.

City in a Bottle | About

What is "City In A Bottle"?

City In A Bottle is an interactive project bordering between art, science and gaming, funded by the Flemish Audiovisual Fund.

The game environment is based on the AI-principle of emergent behaviour. Organisms (plants and insects) start off with basic behaviouristic rules and goals. If an opponent is edible, attack it. If an opponent is stronger, flee. When cornered, fight back. Hide in a flock of relatives to minimise the chance of being singled out. Follow a food trail marked by a relative. Expand and defend a productive environment. Grow colourful feathers/flowers to incite reproduction.

Complex social behavior then emerges by itself as organisms interact with each other. Species with a good strategy will survive and evolve over time, will adapt, will look different. The gaming enviroment changes procedurally, there is no preprogrammed story or pathway. We don't control the biotope. The creatures will find their own way and either co-exist or fight for limited space and food.

“The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we’ve redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do.
