We are building richer and richer applications on the Web platform and this means that developers are running up against new issues to debug and test. We feel like it is a great time to develop new tools that afford you the ability to look into the runtime to hopefully help you find a bug, or allow you to keep your application as responsive as possible. Today we want to start a conversation about some of our thinking, with the hope that you will join in. This book is about lot #2334609, a piece of land known locally as the Maguire Meadow, one of the last undeveloped spaces in the Mile End neighborhood in the Plateau Mont Royal, in Montreal.
Lot #2334609 is a terrain vague — owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, owned by the City of Montreal as of June 2009, used and cherished by the community, the only green space in the Mile End. People feel free in this space. They don’t ask for permission to picnic, grow things, create art, or gather around a campfire. It’s open and wild, unlike most city parks.
To outsiders, it may look like an abandoned field. But, as you will read here, the community has appropriated this space and wants a say in how it will be developed. Development is scheduled for 2009-2010, as part of the city’s $9-million revitalization of the neighborhood.
Facebook has long touted their privacy settings as being highly customizable and secure, so you can be more open and comfortable about sharing information with just the people you choose. But how would you feel if that information was accessible to anyone, anywhere, even if your account was COMPLETELY hidden?
I feel a lot of anger and frustration in this list.
Some of the items seem fine to me. I would not have written them like this ;). I disagree strongly with the last one, not because of the rationale but the form. It’s an unproven affirmation. There will be cases where it will be indeed the case and some not. :)
About geolocation privacy, the issue has hit the fan already ;) Advertising the user’s location is one way to make aware the user (or users in developping countries) of a mobile device. Blocking access to the location is *not always* a solution either. Sometimes the solution will be in how long the data can be kept, sometimes the solution will be in how the data will be used.
Repeat after me 1000 times: It is not a privacy issue, but a lack (or very thin) opacity issue. The network makes the access to information very quick and easy. There’s no need or no use to block it. There is need to be able to slow down the stream at will.
