Quick Tip – Resizing Images Based On Browser Window Size | Build Internet!

In fluid layouts it is easy to format the text to adjust nicely when the window is resized, but the images are not as fluid-friendly. This Quick Tip shows you how to swap between two image sizes based on the current size of the browser, div, or whatever you decide to make the deciding factor. For those looking for a real life example, Last.fm uses this technique on their artist pages.

The technique that will be used can be expanded to cause additional changes upon resize as well, beyond simply image swapping (ie captions, navigation).

A growing collection of Basic WordPress Templates, for web designers | SAOB: Senseless Acts of Beauty

After beginning development of several WordPress websites I found that I was doing the same beginning edits to the wordpress theme structure. So, in order to make my life easy, I proceeded to make some basic editable templates that would suit my needs for multiple websites. Also its very close to Christmas, and this is a time of giving and sharing so I am going to make these theme templates available to anyone.

    NOTE: These theme templates are only meant to be expanded by a web designer, by no means are these templates a finished design.

Now then, there are many basic features of any website that I wanted to make available in each of these theme templates, and over time I will try and make a theme template for each combination.
Features to be considered:

    * Single column layout
    * Two column layout
    * Three column layout
    * Fixed width
    * Fluid width
    * Top navigation addition
    * Search bar in header
    * Multiple side bars

simpleCart(js) + PayPal = E-commerce in minutes

Over the past few years, our company has had several clients who have needed a smaller shopping cart, usually to sell just a couple of items. We generally built these small carts using paypal. I realized it would be nice to package this up, and create a lightweight, easy-to-use, flexible shopping cart.

So we made simpleCart(js). The cart is a 10.5kb javascript file that uses cookies to keep track of the items in the cart. SimpleCart(js) doesn’t require any databases or programming knowledge. You simply need to know some basic HTML and have the ability to copy and paste. However, it can easily be expanded to use databases or contain more advanced options.

Read The Words

ReadTheWords.com began as a simple concept in January 2008: To assist students with learning disabilities with their studies, by means of auditory learning and auditory processing.

To that end we seeked out programers, technologies, and research departments from around the world and came up with a very basic platform, far less sophisticated than what you currently see on our website. Although we had originally intended this site to be used for auditory learning, through our researching efforts we found that the demand for this technology reaches far beyond our originally intended audience. Many other students, young professionals, actors and actresses, research departments, bloggers, ecommerce sites, and others, expressed how this technology could help them with their daily lives, and their businesses.

For this reason, we went back to the drawing board and added more features to meet more users’ needs. ReadTheWords created multiple input methods for users to create readings. We also greatly expanded our efforts to allow users take full advantage of the created readings as mp3’s. In particular, we found that Bloggers are constantly looking for ways to reach a larger audience and we, in turn, have found a way to meet this need by enabling them to create podcasts and share them with their readers. We also created a platform for bloggers and website operators to paste an audio toolbar in their website or blog, making it possible for any reader to become a listener. The feedback has been overwhelming and we continue to add new features and users to our site each day.

So, all this may lead you to wonder about the full extent of the possibilities that this technology presents. The answer is truly limitless. We encourage you to try our free service and let us know how you’ve been able to use it to your meet your own needs.

Pitchfork: Why? Reveal New Album Details

Anticon genre-skippers (and aren't they all?) Why? have unveiled the tracklist of Alopecia, their third album and also the source of recent single "The Hollows".

Alopecia apparently showcases a pretty wide range of influences, and its songs were recorded mostly sampler-free as a live band. In addition to songwriter Yoni Wolf, Josiah Wolf, and Doug McDiarmid, that band has expanded to include Fog members Andrew Broder and Mark "Bear" Erickson.

Anticon will release Alopecia on March 11, with a European release on Tomlab to follow.

Why? have two shows scheduled soon, one in San Francisco on January 12 and another in L.A. three days later.

OpenLDAP Samba Domain Controller On Ubuntu 7.10 | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

This document is a step by step guide for configuring Ubuntu 7.10 as a Samba Domain Controller with an LDAP backend (OpenLDAP). The point is to configure a server that can be comparable, from a central authentication point of view, to a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller. The end result will be a server with an LDAP directory for storing user, group, and computer accounts. A Windows XP Professional SP2 workstation will be able to join the domain once properly configured. Please note that you do not have a fully comparable Windows domain controller at this time. Do not kid yourself, this guide only gets you a server with LDAP authentication. Of course this can be expanded to include slave servers to spread out authentication over multiple networks. Please also note that it took me approximately two and a half weeks to compile this information and get it working. The same functionality can be had in Windows in less than four hours (and this includes operating system installation). In my humble opinion the open source community will need to work on this side of Linux in order for it to be a true alternative to Windows.
