The Scopus Application Program Interface (API) enables you to search the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources. You can select Scopus data elements and create your own mashups. The API returns Scopus data in a format that is easily integrated into an application or your web site.
The Printliminator is a bookmarklet with some simple tools you can use to makes websites print better. One click to activate, and then click to remove elements from the page, remove graphics, and apply better print styling. Here is the bookmarklet:
getElementsBySelector is a python function which takes a standard CSS style selector and returns an array of elements objects from the document that match that selector. This is a frequently used function in JavaScript - if you use a library. Its kind of meaning less to have this function in the server side - unless you are doing screen-scarping. Then its very useful. Recently, I had to work on a Django app that does a bit of screen-scrapping - so I created this function to aid me.

Last but not least, we have also improved some of our accessibility features. The Overlay widget now prevents focus from going to other elements when set to "modal", InfoPanel has better ARIA support and the Slider widget has more intuitive keyboard access for screenreader users.

One of the 8 works I created for the Data Art Show at the Pink Hobo Gallery in Minneapolis.
All these pieces are a pun on the new craze for data visualization. The goals of data visualization as I understand them are to make complicated issues more understandable, to make obscured connections visible and to reveal hidden patterns in the data. After all these tasks have been solved ideally the result should be aesthetically pleasing as well.
But when I look around what is being done in data visualization today I have the suspicion that in many cases the design is more important than the actual information and that the use of data is more an excuse to justify the use of aesthetics.
Since I do not have a problem with aesthetics for their own sake in these pieces I deliberately took the opposite direction. Since I wanted to create something visually interesting I made up my own data which would give me the desired results. All these works are the result of generative algorithms, so all the elements and their connections are actually data and not something I assembled manually in Illustrator.
