French journalists working on Web documentary
Charlotte Burrous / The Daily Record
Visiting Fremont County was more than what they ever dreamed about.

It went so well they have decided to come back this fall to complete the Web documentary, which is supported by the National Centre du Cinema in Paris.
Traveling from France, journalist David Dufresne and photographer Philippe Brault arrived recently to create a Web documentary on society and the culture of the people who live in the prisons and around them in Fremont County.

technobabbler » Blog Archive » drive a webcam with python

I bought a USB webcam off of eBay quite some time ago, and I decided to connect it to my telescope with a little bit of hardware hackery. I'll have to see about posting a writeup on how I did that at a later time. Anyway, when I installed my camera software, I quickly found how horrible the program was. It gave a tiny preview of what the camera saw, and had no way of capturing images or video without waaaay too many clicks of the mouse. That's when I decided to write my own in Python.

This week the biggest dust storm in 70 years blew through Australia, and the photos of it were stunning. So on Wednesday at noon, I decided to make a photo magazine. It was published on MagCloud Thursday night. All told, it was 31.5 hours from idea to publication, and that’s with a few hours of sleep thrown in.

November 9th 2007 - November 13th 2008

one year on foot - 4646km through China

unlimited beard & hair growth

thelongestway.com

musical score by the kingpins ( myspace.com/theoneandonlykingpins ) and zhu fengbo

Additional info:

- I never finished my original goal of walking to Germany. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the desert of Gobi, and then decided to stop walking for now.

- All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi has been completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.

- I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.

- Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.

- The songs I used in the video are 1) Zhu Fengbo - "Olive Tree" and 2) The Kingpins - "L'aventurier" - visit the Kingpins website if you want to know more, they are very cool I think.

- This is not a strict "1 pic a day" video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.

- The core of this project is in fact my website "www.thelongestway.com" where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later.

24 hours in SF: A Geolocation App - Google App Engine - Google Code

Never knowing when a strike of inspiration will cause me to work until late at night (or early in to the morning), I always wanted an application that could tell me where I could grab a cup of coffee or bite to eat where I was, when I was looking, be it 1pm or 1am.
The SFMoMA is all about creating a space for modern art to live. But there's also a meta-layer to the art experience that comes from the aesthetic and conceptual life of the space itself – the colors, the architecture, the little design touches. These elements contribute to our experience of the art inside, but often operate below our cognitive awareness.

I decided to bring one of those meta-elements to the forefront of attention – the typography used inside the museum, on anything from exhibition signage to elevator buttons to restroom signs.

Lately I had same crazy thoughts on coding a javascript wrapper to manipulate images rendered on the server-side. I decided to do some test which eventually resulted in phototype, a client/server-side library, based on prototype, which supports all kinds of image manipulations. On the serverside the library is powered by combination of PHP/GD that renders the image. With phototype, you are able to rotate, resize, flip and do some other cool effects to images. Let's start a quick tour.

Fraser Speirs – On the Flickr support in iPhoto ‘09

As you may know, Apple added Flickr uploading to iPhoto ‘09. As you may guess, I was a little perturbed at this since I pay my mortgage by selling, er, a Flickr upload plugin for iPhoto.

I acquired my copy of iLife ‘09 yesterday and decided to dive deep on how Apple have implemented Flickr integration in iPhoto ‘09. Here are the results of my investigation. Be aware as you read that this is the result of a morning’s click-around investigation and not months of serious use. I will do my best to give an honest assessment of what is in iPhoto ‘09, and you’ve already read my full disclosure in the previous paragraph.

I've been experimenting with some javascript classes that mimic the structure of mapnik's Layer/Style/Rule classes and render OSM data (via GeoJSON) to a <canvas> element. I've also finally taken a look at how github works, so I've decided to share the initial code there in case people are interested. If you don't want to check the code out for yourself there's a demo page here (tested in Firefox and Safari only, so far).

Digital History Hacks (2005-08)

When I began this blog, I had the idea that it would be an integral part of my critical and reflective technical practice. For the past three years, it has served admirably, providing an easy way to share ideas and code and putting me in touch with a wide range of colleagues and new friends. During that time I've tried to stay true to the promise of "hacks," even if I pushed the boundaries of both "digital" and "history". As my technical work has evolved, however, I've begun to feel like this blog is less and less suited to my day-to-day activities. Rather than try and force it to fit, I've decided to build something new.
