labs.moto.com » Blog Archive » DIY Android Home Energy Monitor

Lately we’ve been tinkering with deploying Android beyond the phone (using Google’s open-source Android to connect devices to each other and the web), so we thought we’d see if we could leverage the efficiency of Android on a BeagleBoard, the accessibility of wireless webcams, and the ease of a Flickr feed to a custom Google Gadget to track the ups and downs of our metered utilities.

Why webcams? While there may be a few compelling (low-cost, low-impact) products out there to monitor your electric meter, there are no comparable products for reading gas or water meters.

So until the really smart grid arrives, here’s a way to chart your whole utility spend on your own Google homepage.

Facebook: How to Eliminate “Dead Friend” Suggestions

Last week, in conjunction with its latest redesign, Facebook released “suggestions for helping friends,” a feature that aims to get you to assist your friends that don’t appear to be actively using the site and “reconnect” you with old contacts.

One unfortunate side effect of the feature: it started recommending those you’d rather not connect with, and in some cases, deceased friends.

I'll have to see about posting a writeup on how I did that at a later time. Anyway, when I installed my camera software, I quickly found how horrible the program was. It gave a tiny preview of what the camera saw, and had no way of capturing images or video without waaaay too many clicks of the mouse.
Pulitzer Gateway

The Pulitzer Gateways are the online educational portals that bring together the reporting in an easy to navigate format for use by students and faculty. They offer opportunities for students to connect with the journalists and their peers about global issues via the web. Through the Gateways, students can dig deep into the reporting, discuss it online and share their own stories through user-generated uploads of video and commentary, expanding a global conversation on under-reported international issue.
