PJF's Pages - Journal - Dark Stalking on Facebook

<blockquote><p>However like dark matter, dark users are observable due to their effects on the rest of the universe. If a dark user comments on a stream entry, I can see that comment. More importantly, I can see their user-ID, and I can generate a URL to a page that will contain their name. I can then watch for their activities elsewhere. Granted, I can't directly search for their activity, but I can observe their effects on my friends. For want of a better term, I've been calling this "dark stalking".</p></blockquote>

The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith

Two events made 1776 a remarkable year. The first is the well-known Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress.

The other, which ultimately has had a far greater influence on the world in which we live, was the quiet publication of The Wealth of Nations by Scottish philosopher Adam Smith.

Calling Smith an economist belies the fact that prior to The Wealth of Nations "economics" did not exist. His book is the foundation of the academic discipline.

Inferring friendship network structure by using mobile phone data — PNAS

<blockquote><p>Data collected from mobile phones have the potential to provide insight into the relational dynamics of individuals. This paper compares observational data from mobile phones with standard self-report survey data. We find that the information from these two data sources is overlapping but distinct. For example, self-reports of physical proximity deviate from mobile phone records depending on the recency and salience of the interactions. We also demonstrate that it is possible to accurately infer 95% of friendships based on the observational data alone, where friend dyads demonstrate distinctive temporal and spatial patterns in their physical proximity and calling patterns. These behavioral patterns, in turn, allow the prediction of individual-level outcomes such as job satisfaction.</p></blockquote>

Many mice surf the web under the illusion that their actions are private and anonymous.
Unfortunately, this is not the way it is. Every time you visit a site for a piece of cheese, you
leave a calling card that reveals where you are coming from, what kind of computer you use,
and other details. And many cats keep logs of all your visits, so that they can catch you!
This service allows you to surf the web without revealing any personal information.
It is fast, it is easy, and it is free!

Remote Process Explorer is a powerful tool for managing, monitoring and analyzing processes on a local or remote computer. You can use Remote Process Explorer to not only get the list of processes running on a remote or local computer, but also run a new process, kill a process or change its priority. In real time, Remote Process Explorer monitors the performance of a remote computer, shows what processes are running on it, how much CPU, memory and other system resources they use. It will show hidden processes, which will allow you to detect spyware and malware. The program has additional tools for shutting down/restarting/logging off a remote computer, sending messages to it, calling standard administrative tools. Remote Process Explorer is an advanced tool for administering remote computers.

jQuery Plugin: jQuery Timers

jQuery timers is an attempt to combine jQuery's concise chaining programming style with the awkward style in which timed events are coded in JavaScript to produce a friendlier and more intuitive timed event system. In addition, it fixes the most prevalent issue with the various event systems of JavaScript: misconfigured scope. All the methods you design to use in setTimeout/setInterval in JavaScript cannot use 'this' to reference the desired element because 'this' always references the window object. Because of this, closures are required to produce useful code. Without the need for closures, these methods could be stored inside the class rather than inside the calling method which would produce a more modular and object oriented style of coding.
